repick my target keyword

My site is listed in most search engines, but I find that no people can actually locate my site thru searches. My ranking is too low....

When I started this blog, I picked the keyword term "make money online" which has 54221 monthly searches (overture stat) and 851000 google matches. The KEI was about 3X which looks quite ok to work on. So I optimize my site based on this keyword. But I was proved wrong.

On my other website www.softbath.net which does translation tool download, I was surprised to see a constant stream of visitors comes daily. (tho it is only a few, but it performs better than this blog in case of web traffic). I noticed the difference and wondering why. As I put much effort in this blog to make it content rich, but the translation tool has very few update at all and actually does better.

www.softbath.net is targeted on keyterm "free translation tool", it has only 103 monthly overture searches and 613 google matches. My site is ranked 3X in some of the search engines.

My conclusion:
For small business trying to gain free traffic, it is critical to pick some less competitive keyword terms, and make sure you are located top 50 in some search engine.

I have now repick my target keyword as "seo optimization tips". I will search for more less competitive keyword terms, hope it will add up to more traffic. Lets see if it helps.

I was drown in the huge list of search engine results

I think I made it wrong, I pick the wrong keyword to target on !!
The competition is too much, when my website is only a blog with PageRank0, how can I expect people can find my site in a google search which yields at least 100,000 results ?

very sleepy with headache, I'll sleep now and continue tomorrow.

Good keywords - a keyword selection tool

I just downloaded a keyword selector tool from goodkeywords.com

It was a version 2 already, and I saw the build day is 21/6, I guess the developer is working hard to make it a great tool...

The tool is actually no big difference from the web versions from many popular SEO sites e.g. www.seochat.com, but obviously, it runs fast !!

The keyword suggestions is missing the most important search engine, google. I understand google isn't providing any of those search count statistics, but if someone can suggest a approximate number, I would be delighted~

For me, what Im always looking for is a tool that tells me my search ranking on certain keyword / key terms. You know Im not ranking top 10 nor top 100 in some top keywords, but I'd love to know my position among the, say 1,000,000 results.

If there is no such tools in the market, I will try to build one myself.

BlogExplosion

I think I should mention it earlier.

I have joined BlogExplosion for a while, and it has been quite good in generating blog traffic to my blog. Yes it has a huge member list, but its hard to earn credits. (2 surfs equals 1 visit.)
But you can try to develop a referal list to help you gain credits from your downline.

Good way to gain free traffic, but got to work hard (to surf its member blogs) !!!
BTW, free credits will show up sometimes while you are surfing blogs. Its around 2-5 credits normally, But I have once received a single prize of 30 credits. ^.^

If you're looking for blog traffic, you can start off by clicking on the little blogexplosion icon on the right. I will give you 100 kisses if you are nice enough to click and join !!!

keyword select

from microsoft smallbusiness concerning about 15 tips on keyword selecting:

Be a bad speller (or at least know how to be one). Research the keywords that your customers might use but spell incorrectly. "You'd be amazed at how often prospects misspell common words," says ToTheWeb's Brisco.

7 don'ts you should avoid in your website

I follow some links and finally reach submit-it which is the a microsoft branch I guess. They have some articles about search engine optimization tips

4 steps to optimizing your site for search engines (the points are soooo general....)

Search Engine Optimization Tips

In which it has 7 don't that worth mentioning, I'll quote it here:

Do not:

  1. Do anything to trick the search engines into listing your site better. If what you are doing is not listed as one of our search engine tips the search engines will likely view it as spam and penalize you.
  2. List keywords anywhere except in your keywords meta tag. By "list" we mean something like - keyword 1, keyword 2, keyword 3, keyword 4, etc. There are very few legitimate reasons that a list of keywords would actually appear on a web page or within the page's HTML code and the search engines know this. While you may have a legitimate reason for doing this we would recommend avoiding it so that you do not risk being penalized by the search engines.
  3. Use the same color text on your page as the page's background color. This has often been used to keyword stuff a web page. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.
  4. Use multiple instances of the same tag. For example, using more than one title tag. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.
  5. Submit identical pages. For example, do not duplicate a page of your site, give the copies different file names, and submit each one. Search engines can detect this and view it as spam.
  6. Submit the same page to any engine more than once within 24hrs.
  7. Use any keywords in your keywords meta tag that do not directly relate to the content of your page.

haha, sounds too strict and I realize I have done a few points among the don'ts... particulary point 2, most of us list keywords in the meta tag, how can we avoid that ? I also match point 3.....>.<

any comments / ideas ?
